The Eye: Our Most Important Sense Organ

The sense of sight is not only the most widely used sense in society but also the subject of numerous scientific studies. In fact, about 75% of all scientific publications on our senses are dedicated to the sense of sight.

However, in today’s world, our eyes are being used differently than nature intended. The increased use of digital screens and devices means we often stare intently at objects close to us for prolonged periods, which can lead to a range of eye-related issues, including dry eyes, burning eyes, red eyes, increased short-sightedness, headaches, and a deterioration of focusing flexibility.

With proper vision care, you can maintain healthy and enjoyable eyesight:

14 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Eyes

Tip #1: Pay attention to the minimum distance between your eyes and the object.

The working or reading distance should be at least as long as the distance between the base of your middle finger and your elbow. The computer screen should be even further away. The exact distance depends on the size of the monitor. When watching TV, you should keep a distance of at least 2.5 meters.

Tip #2: Visualize distances.

After doing close-up work, cover your open eyes with your hands and visualize faraway objects, such as mountains. This helps to relax your eyes and prevent eye strain.

Tip #3: Take work breaks.

Regular breaks (every 20 minutes) should be taken, with at least 1 minute of walking.

Tip #4: Maintain an upright sitting posture.

The sitting posture should be upright and straight. Do not read while lying down.

Tip #5: Ensure proper lighting.

The work or reading area should be well-lit, about 3 times brighter than the surrounding area. When watching TV, you should not completely darken the room.

Tip #6: Position yourself directly in front of the object.

The work or reading surface should be placed directly in front of you.

Tip #7: Place your desk in front of a window.

The desk should not be in front of a wall, but in front of a window.

Tip #8: Avoid sewing activities when you are sick.

During an illness, longer sewing activities should be avoided.

Tip #9: Avoid too much TV and computer games.

You should not watch too much TV or play computer games, whether children or adults.

Tip #10: Exercise.

Engage in sports several times a week and move daily in the fresh air.

Tip #11: Use your peripheral vision consciously.

When outdoors, you should occasionally focus on an object and still pay attention to things in the environment.

Tip #12: Engage in creative activities.

Creative activities stimulate visual imagination.
